Hot Chocolate on a Stick

DSCN2449

  • 8 oz. chocolate of your choice
  • 2 T. Cocoa
  • 4 T. Powdered Sugar
  • Pinch of Salt
  • additional chocolate of your choice
  • slab of butter
  • Assorted Toppings (nuts, sprinkles, etc.)
  • Popsicle or Sucker Sticks

In a double broiler (or bowl over hot water in a saucepan), melt 8 oz. chocolate. When chocolate is just about melted, SLOWLY add the salt, sugar, and cocoa. By SLOWLY I mean about a teaspoon at a time, and mix well after each addition! The chocolate should be the consistency of frosting. ((If you haven’t added all the sugar and cocoa yet and it starts to get too thick and/or clumpy, then it’s ok to stop and just leave it with what you have. Just make sure that you’ve added an equal 1 to 2 ratio of cocoa to powdered sugar.)) Put the chocolate into a Ziploc bag, cut a corner off, then squeeze the chocolate into molds (I have a mini bite-size brownie pan I used, or ice cube trays would work too). Add a stick to each one, then refrigerate or freeze until chocolate is solid. Melt the additional chocolate, adding butter as needed so that it’s smooth and thin enough for dipping. Dip the top of the chocolate on a stick into the dipping chocolate, then dip into toppings of your choice (my 3 year old did this part for me and absolutely loved it)! Place on wax paper and let cool.

When ready to use, weigh your chocolate on a stick. Use one cup of hot milk for every ounce of chocolate on a stick (ex: 3/4 oz. hot chocolate on a stick = 3/4 cup hot milk). Stir the hot chocolate on a stick in your hot milk until melted, then enjoy!

You can store these in an airtight container in the freezer or in a cool place for up to one year, but do not store in the fridge as they will absorb flavors around them.

Do not be afraid to mix this up and try variations of dark, milk, white, etc. chocolate of your liking. Also, try a variety of toppings… I used some peppermint white chocolate chips on some of mine and it was delicious. My daughter wanted M&M’s, those turned out great too! Just get creative!
